If you don’t want gifts, you can ask that gifts be donated to HSoP in honor of your birthday. HSoP is grateful for such a supportive community, and no donation is too big or too small. Donating used pet supplies Do you have pet supplies that your pet no longer uses or likes? HSoP can accept many used pet donations to care for the homeless pets in our shelter! HSoP cannot accept prescription medications from your pets. If you have medications that your pet no longer needs, please call your local veterinary clinic to donate them. HSoP uses Animal Clinic and Hospital. If you donate the medications there, they can prescribe those medications to us at no charge when we have a pet in need! Thank you Animal Rescue Aid for providing our homeless pups with 16 dog cots to keep them comfortable, and kong toys and treats to keep them happy! Learn all about kitten season at our shelter! Kitten Season What is kitten season? Did you know that the feline reproductive cycle is influenced by two factors; warmer weather and the amount of daylight in a 24-hour period? In our local temperate climate, we experience the warmer weather during March-October. This time of the year is referred to as "Kitten Season". There are many cats who live outdoors and indoor/outdoor that are not spayed/neutered. These cats begin reproducing when the weather heats up causing a major influx of homeless kittens. How can you help? Spay and neuter your pets! Spaying and neutering not only stops cats from reproducing, but also alleviates some dangerous health concerns for your pet. Need financial assistance? Check out our Spay-Neuter-Assistance-Program. Do you have a feral cat on your property? Take a look at our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral cats in Latah County. Donate supplies! Each year, HSoP takes in roughly 150 orphaned kittens without their mom. These kittens require extra love and care while they grow up! Some needed items: heat pads, kitten milk replacement, kitten nursing bottles, karo syrup, canned kitten food, gerber baby food, and baby wipes. To check out our current needs, visit Donate . Donate money! Many orphaned kittens come to HSoP sick and injured, and need immediate veterinary assistance. Our life-saving medical fund is used most often during kitten season. HSoP relies on our foster parents tremendously during kitten season! Kittens sent into foster are safer, happier, and healthier than if they were staying at the shelter. Learn all about our barn buddy program for feral cats! Let these furry friends earn their keep by limiting the rodent population in your barn or warehouse. HSoP Barn Buddy Program Available Barn Cats: HSoP does not have any cats available for this program. If you would like to welcome a barn cat onto your property, please give us a call at (208) 883-1166 so we know to contact you when a barn cat does become available. Barn cats help to earn their keep by: Controlling the rodent population Reducing your need to use mouse trap/poisons Saving you money on feed grain spoilage/ loss Requirements: We do not place cats that are best suited to be house pets and we don’t place kittens under age four months as barn cats, unless they are feral/semi-feral. A secure, dry barn or building for shelter with heat source is required. As a non-profit organization, we appreciate a donation to cover the cost of the spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, de-worming and other needed preventative care. We ask for a $25.00 donation. The commitment and ability to keep the cats confined to a stall, small room, or crate for two to four weeks (depends on the cats and the barn) to acclimate them to their new environment before release. A constant supply of dry food and fresh water. The willingness to trap the cats to provide licensed veterinary care in the event of a severe injury or illness. Learn about the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) offered by our shelter. This program lowers the cost of a spay or neuter surgery for owned pets. Spay & Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) SNAP Application If you have a pet that needs fixed but just can't quite afford the full cost of surgery, we can help. We maintain a special program to help people cover the cost of spaying and neutering their pets. This program is funded entirely by donations. There are no income limits to qualify for assistance, we simply ask that people use this program only if they truly need the help. Additionally, if you have some change to spare to this program, look for our donation banks on store counters all over Moscow. All funding from those banks will directly support SNAP. This is a coupon program open to all residents of Latah County, that need financial assistance with spaying or neutering their pet. We give you a coupon good for money off the price of a spay or neuter. $90.00 towards a spay, and $50.00 towards a neuter. Vouchers can be used at any veterinary office participating in the program. If you need assistance, just drop by the shelter for a form or download and print the application. This form must be completed and then mailed into the address on the form. Please plan ahead when making your spay and neuter appointments, as it can take about two weeks to get the coupon in your hand, and you must have the coupon at the time of appointment. Volunteering for special events is one of the best ways you can support your local humane society! We host several fundrasing events per year, and our volunteers make it all possible. Event Volunteering HSoP holds several annual fundraising events, many of which require volunteers to ensure the event is running smoothly. Event Volunteering is a great opportunity for clubs, community, business and philanthropic groups to support an organization with a great cause. Soup and Pie Held every February, Soup and Pie is a social luncheon where HSoP supporters can enjoy a bowl of soup and a slice of pie. Volunteers at our soup and pie event are responsible for selling tickets at the door, admitting those with tickets purchased online, serving soup to attendees, and slicing up delicious pie for all of those who came to support our animals. Volunteers are also extremely helpful for the setup and teardown of event materials (tables, chairs, decorations, food, etc.). Paw-Louse 5K Fun Run & Walk Paw-Louse Fun run is a fun outing for all family members (including the furry ones) that starts and ends at the corner of Rail Road and Sweet Ave. Volunteers make this event possible by handing out water and snacks, distributing T-shirts, setting up the 5k route, and helping to keep our participants (people and dogs alike!) on track. Howling at Hamilton The Sunday after Labor Day, at the Hamilton Lowe Aquatic Center, it’s the dogs’ day at the pool. With dog dock diving contest. Volunteers have a great time at this event! Some volunteers collect entrance fees at the gate, while others sell toys and treats to those who attend. A few lucky volunteers will even get to help judge the pool jumping contest! Pet Pictures with Santa Each December, patrons and their pets spread the holiday cheer while posing with Santa. Our volunteers help bring Christmas joy by setting up the photo station, cleaning up after the fact, and keeping our photogenic furry friends entertained. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Free-roaming cats (feral and stray) are the biggest source of homeless kittens every year. HSoP takes in nearly 250 kittens per summer, and 1/2 of those kittens come in without a mom. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) will prevent unwanted cat births, reduce the feline infectious diseases in our area, and lower the number of unowned, homeless pets in our county. The Humane Society of the Palouse does not accept feral cats into our shelter. TNR Application TNR Agreement Be a life-saver and donate to our TNR fund today! Donate HSoP has created a TNR program to assist the residents of Latah County with feral cats on their property. Our TNR program will provide feral caregivers in our community the ability to spay/neuter, vaccinate, and ear-tip their feral cats at participating veterinary clinics. This program is free to all Latah County residents, but a suggested $20.00 donation is appreciated. Our newly created TNR program is dedicated to our feral felines here in Latah County. Feral cats are wild and not domesticated, meaning they are not suited to be a house pet. Feral cats do not want to be around people, and are better fit for sheds, barns, and garages. For more information on feral cats click here. HSoP can loan out live-traps for you catch your feral cat(s) safely and humanely. We do require a $50.00 cash or check deposit that will be returned to you when the trap is brought back to us. TNR Process: Apply for the TNR program through HSoP. Once you receive your TNR coupon from us, call the participating veterinary clinic to schedule your surgery drop-off time. Return your feral cat(s) back to your property and release them, following any recommendations the veterinarian gave you. Why should you return the cat(s) back to your property? If a feral cat showed up on your property and won't leave, it is there for a reason. It may have found good shelter in your barn, or a good source of food like rodents. If the feral cat feels like it has everything it needs, it will stay. If you remove that cat, another cat will move in for the same reasons the first cat did. By keeping your feral cat on your property after it has been through our TNR, you will have one cat who will protect your property and will be less likely to allow another cat to enter.
