Choosing a Pet

The Humane Society of the Palouse is here to help find homes for hundreds of pets that have been relinquished for various reasons. We give all of our pets a comprehensive physical exam, ensure that they are in good health and have all of the necessary shots, and spay and neuter them, if they aren't already.

We encourage you to stop by and see the animals at the Humane Society, as you may find the buddy of a lifetime! We have helped plenty of happy owners find their ideal pet, so we know we can help you!

Which pet is right for you?

If you are planning on adopting a dog, you should start by identifying the best breed for your lifestyle. Characteristics to keep in mind are:

  • Size. When considering whether to adopt a small, medium or large animal, you may want to evaluate:

    • the size of your home and/or yard

    • the amount of exercise you will be able to provide the new pet

    • and the age, size and temperament of any children your new pet will be around regularly

  • Activity Level. Some dogs require more exercise and space than others.

  • Health risks. You should be aware of the types of health problems that are common in a breed you are considering.

  • Barking. You may want to consider how often a particular breed barks.

  • Hair Length and Color. Longer-haired dogs will shed more, and you may want to think about how the color of your dog's hair may match (or not match!) the colors of your carpeting and furniture.

*All adoptable (healthy and good-tempered) and treatable animals are adopted and euthanasia is reserved only for those animals who cannot be rehabilitated or have terminal illnesses or injuries.
